“For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.” Philippians 3:20
Few things spark a sense of national pride like the Olympic Games. The stands are full of people dressed in their national colors. Spectators display their citizenship by rooting for their countries competitors. For us, chants of USA stir deep emotions and even tears when our compatriots do well in their events. I also remember experiencing a sense of relief when I encountered fellow Americans when I traveled in Europe. I had never met them before, but there was an immediate bond because of our common citizenship.
The same is true when I meet another believer for the first time. There is an immediate connection because of our common heritage in Jesus. In my travels in Europe, I have also met believers from other nations, and I have seen how our citizenship in heaven trumps earthly national pride. The bond of the Holy Spirit is as unique a bond as there is. We can even sing the same worship songs in different languages and enter into corporate praise.
I have yet to meet another citizen of heaven who is not eagerly anticipating Jesus’ return. Our world is going crazy; we would all prefer to get out of here and head home. I know that I have found myself praying, “Lord, just come and get us out of here.” At the same time, I realize that this is a selfish prayer. There are still so many people who need to hear the gospel and turn to Jesus as their Savior. I don’t want anyone to have to go through the judgments of Revelation. So, as a citizen of heaven, it is my duty to represent my country and my King well by declaring His wonders and the gospel of His grace. Maranatha!
