As we continue to share some warfare strategies, I want to focus on understanding why the enemy has a legal right to come at us.

Many believers think that once they are saved the enemy cannot bother them anymore.

I wish that were true.

The reality is that once we become believers and ally ourselves with Jesus, we are a genuine threat to the enemy and his plans.

He will launch his attack, and he will do so based on the standing we or our ancestors have given him.

Remember that Paul tells us in Ephesians 4:26 to not let the sun go down on our anger and give the enemy a foothold.

The Greek word translated foothold is topos and it means ground.

It is relevant both on the earthly battlefield and the spiritual court system.

Just like he argued against God’s judgment of Job, we have spiritual prosecuting attorneys assigned to us to look for grounds to entrap us in spiritual bondage.

They seek to arrest our ability to carry out our spiritual calling.

One of their primary arguments is made through ancestral iniquities that have not be confessed and covered by the blood of Jesus.

Exodus 20:5 sets this precedent that the sins of the father will be visited upon the children to the 4th generation.

Now, you might say, “we are under grace, how can my ancestor’s sins matter?”

The enemy does not argue from grace; he argues from the Law.

Once grace is applied to the iniquities of our ancestors through our prayers, the enemy loses his standing and can no longer claim this position in our lives.

How do these generational sins manifest?

They can be seen from the simple passage of flesh patterns passed on through conditioning to the more complex generational covenants cut through occult rituals.

Those are the two extremes, but there is a lot of yuck in between.

How do we deal with it?

We simply ask the Lord to bring to our minds the iniquities of our ancestors, write them down, and then use the confess, renounce, reclaim pattern of prayer.

This is provided in Step 7 of our free document Steps to Freedom. Once we take the ground back, the enemy loses his standing and we experience freedom and victory.
