How many times have you heard or read Psalm 23?
When you hear, “The LORD is my Shepherd,” do you groan and say, “yeah, yeah I’ve heard that thousands of times.”
Personally, I don’t think there is a more beautiful Psalm written by David.
As I studied it more this morning, I was struck by the intimacy that it conveyed with our Shepherd.
A shepherd is also a husband.
If a shepherd when to an Agricultural College today, he would get a degree in Animal Husbandry. In other words, he would earn a degree in taking care of animals.
David certainly had plenty of experience being a shepherd.
The image of the LORD as his Shepherd was one which was easy for him to relate.
As a single woman, I cling to the knowledge that the LORD is my Husband.
So, I tend to switch the concept of Shepherd for Husband.
I take great comfort in knowing that because the LORD is my Husband, I will never lack.
He makes me rest securely in Him knowing He will provide my physical needs of food, water, and shelter.
He restores my soul. In other words, He provides all that I need to think and feel truth about Him and who He has made me to be.
His never-wavering love and acceptance are more than enough for my soul’s well-being.
He guides me to make righteous choices that bring His name honor and glory.
Even when He leads me into the deepest and darkest valley of life, I need not fear simply because He is right there with me.
These valleys are where He grows my faith. I cannot see Him or feel Him, but He is there nonetheless. It is here that He moves me from ‘Seeing is believing’ to ‘Believing without seeing.’
He provides my needs even when my enemies are eating ‘at my table.’
This reminds me of how challenging ‘friendly fire’ is to endure. It’s no fun to get shot at by those who pretend to be for me but are really against me.
Oil always is a representative of the Holy Spirit. It’s comforting to see the picture of oil being poured out on me to the point of abundant overflowing.
The LORD seeks to pour Himself into me and abundantly through me so that His aroma pleasantly impacts all of those around me.
How wonderful it is to know that the LORD’s goodness, lovingkindness and mercy follow me wherever I go every day of my life!
I am forever a member of His household! What a glorious present and future I have in Him as my Shepherd and Husband!
Beloved, if you have trusted Jesus as your Savior, He is your Shepherd and Husband too.
Rest in His love and protection and enjoy an intimate walk with Him!
