To true football fans, Joe Namath is a household name.
His exploits both on and off the field with the New York Jets earned him a spot in the NFL Hall of Fame, and a Super Bowl ring after his underdog Jets beat the Colts in Super Bowl III.
Namath had the gall to “guarantee” a victory and pull it off.
Pro football fans have never forgotten the way Namath ran off the field that night, holding up one index finger, silently reminding the world that he’d made the guarantee good.
God always makes His guarantee good!
In my series of blogs through Romans 6-8, we have come to Romans 8:32, God’s guarantee to us.
In vs. 32, Paul answers the first two questions we saw in our last blog by asking a third question:
“He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?”
God went to such great lengths for us by not even holding back His own Son!
The phrase but delivered Him over means to hand Him over.
It is not just God handing Jesus over to death, but to the mocking, spitting, punches, scourging, and even handing Him over to God’s own wrath which He poured out on Christ!
The phrase for us all is referring to Christ’s substitutionary death on the cross.
The question is:
If God did not hold back His most precious possession, His own dear Son, is it not logical and reasonable to assume God will freely give us all things?
Isn’t this small in comparison to His own Son?
If we have Christ we have everything!
The phrase all things includes all that comes together with Christ:
- His Resurrection life,
- no condemnation,
- no hell,
- all we need for our spiritual growth,
- true happiness,
- and all we need throughout all eternity.
It is all that will meet our needs, so we can live to God’s glory.
It is all that we need for our eternal security.
Let’s suppose you buy a beautiful diamond ring and it was very expensive: $100,000.
The salesman says, “I have a box here to put it in, but it will be $5 extra.”
You would probably say, “I am spending all this money on this ring and you are going to charge me for the box?”
No, they wouldn’t do that!
The box comes with it; they are glad to give you the box.
If God did not hold back His Son, anything else to give us is minimal in comparison.
Thank God for his guarantee to us!
Blessings!

An excellent comparison between the diamond and the box. Praise God for the Gift of all gifts.
